Cancer grass, also known as puppy grass, skull grass, skull grass, atlanchana, macachampa de milpa or simply sticky.
It is a wild Mexican herbaceous plant of the Lythraceae family, originally from the Neovolcanic Axis, but widely distributed throughout the territory. It grows in humid cultivated fields, roadsides, river and stream banks and flooded areas, but it is also possible to find them in gardens, backyards and in vacant lots and small gaps in the streets in large cities, such as Mexico City, Puebla, Xalapa, Guanajuato and many other states of Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Tlaxcala and Veracruz.
In traditional medicine it is used against pain caused by cancer, disinfection of wounds, sores, bumps, inflammations, skin rashes and as an antiglycemic, that is, to control high blood glucose levels. It is also antidiarrheal and is known to be used for the treatment of urinary ailments. It is used in temazcales together with a variety of plants, it is considered ornamental and to attract pollinating insects, particularly wild bees.
